Shelves are one of those rare design elements that blend elegance with pure practicality like no other. They display our rare collections of books, show our ceramics chef d'oeuvres, remind us of faraway lands through souvenirs, and simply solve storage problems. When done well, they feel intentional. Almost architectural.

The good news? Installation is far less complicated than it appears. We know how to build shelves on a wall like a pro. The proof? Our handmade wooden shelves.

How to Build Floating Shelves on a Wall: Tools and Materials

A close-up of a tape measure on a white background

Before you dive into our quick guide on how to build shelves on a wall step by step, ensure you have all the essentials. Having everything at hand keeps the process smooth and precise. So, the basic tools are:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Level (preferably from 60 to 120 cm)
  • Stud finder
  • Power drill
  • Drill bits
  • Screwdriver or drill driver
  • Hammer
  • Wall anchors
  • Safety glasses

When it comes to the materials, you should have the following:

  • Boards (solid wood/plywood/MDF)
  • Hardware
  • Screws
  • Anchors or toggle bolts
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood finish (optional)

Floating Shelves vs. Bracket Shelves

Picking the right style is the first design decision. Each has its own aesthetic and structural advantages, so before you settle somewhere, check this out.

Floating Displays

Floating Shelves vs. Bracket Shelves

They appear to “hover” with no visible support. The main advantages of these items are a clean, modern look and an ideal display for décor.

The cons?

There are some:

  • Limited weight capacity.
  • Installation requires more precision.
  • Hardware must align perfectly with studs or anchors.

Hovering displays typically use a hidden metal rod or mounting plate inserted into the item itself.

Bracket Displays

If you wonder how to build shelves on a wall with brackets, you have to know that these items rely on visible supports underneath the board. The pros include stronger and more load-bearing material, easier installation (no PhD needed!), and decorative bracket options (add character instantly!). As for the flaws (there are spots even on the sun), we should mention that brackets remain visible while the appearance is slightly more traditional. Live-edge or rounded edge floating shelves of this type are ideal for books, kitchen storage, or heavier objects.

Step-by-Step Installation

How to build shelves on a wall from scratch? Follow our quick plan:

  • Plan the placement. Measure the surface and decide exactly where the decor will sit. Make sure to have 25–35 cm (10–14 in) between decorative shelves, 30–40 cm (12–16 in) for books, 45 cm (18 in) or more if you have larger items. Use a pencil to mark the desired height.
  • Locate the studs. They guarantee the strongest support. Use a stud finder and mark their positions. Whenever possible, anchor shelves directly into studs (especially in the case of heavy loads). Don’t have studs? Use high-quality anchors or toggle bolts.
  • Mark the drill holes. Hold the bracket or mounting plate against the wall and mark the holes. Use a level to ensure the item will sit perfectly horizontal. Even a slight tilt becomes noticeable once objects are placed on it.
  • Drill pilot holes. Drill small pilot holes at the marked points. They help prevent surface damage, screw misalignment, as well as cracking in drywall or plaster.
  • Install anchors (if needed). If you’re drilling without studs, insert wall anchors into the pilot holes and tap gently with a hammer until flush with the surface. Anchors expand behind the wall to hold the screws securely.
  • Attach the brackets or mounting hardware. Screw the brackets or the floating shelf mounting plate firmly into the wall. Now, check again with the level before tightening completely.
  • Install the item. Place the board onto the brackets or slide it onto the floating hardware. Secure with screws from underneath if required, and then step back and be happy because now you know well how to build book shelves on a wall.

The Art of the Invisible: Installing Floating Shelves That Seem to Hover

Whether you prefer round, flat, or live edge floating shelves, hidden installations can work magic. It creates the illusion that the item is emerging directly from the wall.

The process is quick and smooth:

  • Install a concealed mounting bracket, typically a steel rod system or hidden plate, into wall studs.
  • Drill matching holes into the back of the item if using rod-style hardware.
  • Slide the item onto the rods until it sits flush against the wall.
  • Tighten set screws underneath the display to lock it in place.

For hovering pieces, thicker boards (at least 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches) look better and provide structural strength.

How to Build Shelves on a Curved Wall

If you have to deal with a curved wall, live-edge, round, or flat edge shelves rock on it. They accentuate the architecture in an unusually beautiful way. There are several options to avail of. First, you can use multiple small boards. Shorter ones arranged in sequence naturally follow the curve are just wow. The second option is the flexible bracket placement. In this case, you install brackets at slight angles so the decor aligns with the curve. Finally, the last option – custom curved units – fits best in dramatic spaces. Carpenters create them and cut to match the wall’s radius.
